Business Investment Management

Institutional portfolio management for the assets your business holds, governed by a written policy and managed by our own investment committee, including CFA® charterholders.

Our Methodology

How We Manage Institutional Investments

Most companies manage their investable assets on one person’s judgment. That holds up until there is a second owner, a board or a lender asking what the portfolio is for and why it holds what it holds.

At Gatewood, we manage your company’s assets, write an investment policy for the business and you or your board choose what to adopt. That policy is also what decides how much stays liquid against the obligations already on your calendar and how much is genuinely free to be invested over a longer horizon. We work as an extension of your finance or treasury function rather than in place of it: your bank, your CPA and your controller keep doing what they do, and we manage the portfolio. Every meeting you get a written review of what is held, how it performed and what changed.

Watch our Managing Director, Retirement Plans, Micah Alsobrook, explain why it matters.

The Deliverables

What Our Service Includes

Every service in our planning model produces tangible, measurable deliverables that you can expect to receive.

Investment Policy Statement

The written policy governing how the entity’s assets are invested, what it may hold and who decides, drafted for you or your board to adopt and reviewed each year.

Asset Allocation and Portfolio Construction

The portfolio built to the policy rather than to a model, with each allocation set against the horizon the business is actually investing over and the risk it accepts.

Liquidity and Reserve Analysis

A written calculation of what the entity needs to keep accessible against payroll, taxes and scheduled obligations, and what is genuinely free to be invested longer.

Outside Account Analysis

A written review of the entity accounts you hold elsewhere, covering allocation, risk, return and the fees you are paying, with a recommendation on each one.

Trading and Rebalancing

The ongoing work of holding the portfolio where the policy says it should sit as markets move, as cash comes into the business and as the business draws on it.

Quarterly Positioning Review

A written review of what the portfolio holds, how it has performed and what changed in our positioning, delivered quarterly and ready to take to your board.

Get the Most From Your Plan

Your Integrated Financial Plan

For many business owners, the company is the largest asset the household owns. How you pay yourself, which retirement plan you sponsor, when you reinvest and how you eventually retire or sell all shape your personal plan and your retirement, this year and in the years that follow.

That is why Gatewood includes the value of your business in your personal plan, and why one team manages both around one set of goals.

Every service on this wheel works from the same plan, so each one you use adds to a single picture: the business side shows what the company earns, owes and is worth, and the household side shows what that means for your income, savings, taxes and family. You can begin with the service you need most today and add others as your business and household change.

A ring of thirteen services around a centre reading Your Plan. The upper half is for households: financial planning, cash management, investment management, insurance management, tax planning, estate planning and tax preparation. The lower half is for businesses: tax preparation, accounting services, CFO services, retirement plans, insurance management and investment management. Each segment links to that service. What Firm-to-Family® Means

For the Families Behind the Business

Behind every business are families who depend on it.

The owner's household depends on what the company is worth and what it distributes. Each employee's household depends on the paycheck, the benefits and the plan they were enrolled in on their first day. We have never met a business decision that stopped at the business — which is why we built the firm to serve the family behind it.

Your Client Care Team makes recommendations for your plan based on the advice of our Investment Committee, bringing in our tax and accounting teams so that every decision made takes into consideration both your personal and professional financial plans.

That is what we call Firm-to-Family®, and it is why your plan is supported by a diverse and experienced team rather than one person.

Frequently Asked Questions

Business Investment Management is the process of portfolio construction and management for a business entity.

The company is the client, so the portfolio is built the way an institution governs its money: a written investment policy setting what may be held and who decides, a portfolio built to that policy, an investment committee accountable for keeping to it, and written reporting on a set schedule.

The assets can be reserves, retained earnings, proceeds held before a transition, or capital set aside for a purpose with a date on it.

A personal account is created and managed based on a family or single party's risk tolerance and goals.

An institutional account takes into consideration the goals of the company and translates that into to a written policy that the business can adopt and agree to.

This means there is a standard to measure against and documentation for why decisions are made. That matters when a business has more than one owner, a board, a lender or a partner who will eventually ask what the portfolio is for. It also means the account survives a change in who is sitting in the owner’s chair.

We manage corporate and institutional assets, including operating reserves, excess cash, short-term liquidity, and longer-term investment portfolios.

Our approach can include fixed income, bond ladders, equities, and other investment strategies aligned with the organization’s cash flow needs, risk tolerance, and objectives.

An Investment Policy Statement establishes clear guidelines for how your organization’s assets are managed, including investment objectives, risk tolerance, liquidity needs, and investment parameters. It helps mitigate risk by promoting diversification, setting appropriate investment limits, and ensuring consistent, disciplined decision-making aligned with your organization’s goals.

Investment Management is priced as a percentage of the assets we manage, calculated based on the balance of your managed accounts on the last business day of the preceding quarter, multiplied by your tiered fee.

Some business services are sold separately on their own fee schedule, including employer-sponsored retirement plans, business tax preparation, business accounting and CFO services. Fees there depend on the size and complexity of your business.

Hear What Our Clients Say

“My wife and I moved to St. Louis four years ago and became Gatewood clients in 2024, on a referral from our daughter-in-law. Her father was an established attorney who had said good things about the team, and that recommendation was passed down to us. That introduction set an expectation, and the people there have matched it. We've met a lot of the team by now, and the impression has been consistent with every one of them. Each person we're introduced to is professional, smart, and they work together well as a group — which says something about the people Gatewood hires…” Read more.
