Our Approach

How We Manage Business Wealth

Most firms manage your retirement plan, or your books, and leave you holding four service agreements and hoping they are aligned. We manage the whole picture — accounting, tax, investments, insurance, retirement plans and even the owner's personal plans — as one team, with a specialist in each area operating under one strategy rather than in separate silos.

That means your company's plan does not depend on one person or company knowing everything. We call it the Firm-to-Family® model, and a company counts as a family here — how the business performs reaches every household attached to it, from the CEO to the intern. Your company is a client of the firm rather than of one person, so the plan holds through a vacation, a promotion, or a retirement on either side of the table.

Watch our Chief Planning Officer, Christina Shockley, walk through how it works.

What You Can Expect

Our Process at a Glance

We are process-driven, not product-driven. That means our new client onboarding is focused on getting to know you, not pushing products you don't need or a commitment that doesn't fit. Every family we care for moves through the same five steps — designed to educate you on our process and give us a clear picture of your goals.
  1. Get To Know You

    Initial Meeting

Our first meeting is about getting to know you and what you're looking for in a wealth management relationship. This is an honest dialogue, and we tell you plainly whether we are the right firm to support you.
  2. Gather the Data

    Goals Assessment

We gather the information to get a full picture of your finances and ask questions to learn about your family's goals. By the end of this meeting we'll have the data we need to build personalized recommendations.
  3. Model Your Options

    Solutions Meeting

We present our recommendations using live scenario modeling that lets you test strategies during the meeting and measure the gaps in your current plan, so you can make informed, confident decisions on how to proceed.
  4. Move Your Accounts

    Onboarding Meeting

If you decide to move forward, we introduce you to your Client Care Team, walk you through the onboarding process, grant you access to your Gatewood Wealth Portal, and set expectations for your future meetings.
  5. Ongoing Care

    Client Care Meetings

You and your family continue to meet with us at least once a year to review your plan, but throughout the year, you can schedule on-demand calls with our team for any questions or concerns that arise.
Can I Work with Gatewood?

The Five Stages of Business Wealth

Businesses grow in stages, and as a company grows, so does the complexity of its finances. We guide companies the same way we care for families — with a plan built to endure for generations, whichever stage you are in today.
  1. The start-up stage is focused on building clean records and a compliant payroll process, before informal habits become later tax problems.
  2. The growth stage is focused on closing the books on time and projecting taxes early, so revenue does not outrun the systems tracking it.
  3. The maturity stage is focused on finding where your margin comes from and putting the profit to work, in reserves, people and a retirement plan.
  4. The transition stage is focused on learning what the company is worth and raising that number, instead of letting an offer dictate it.
  5. The legacy stage is focused on moving value from the company to the family, so what you built supports the generation that follows you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Business wealth management is the coordinated management of a company's complete financial picture — as well as the owner's when they become a personal client. In practice that means the accounting, the tax return, the retirement plan, the business insurance and the investment accounts are handled under one strategy rather than in separate silos. Most owners contract these services separately from four or five providers. Gatewood delivers them from one team.

We can, and for most owners that is the point. The business is usually the largest asset on the personal balance sheet and the one least likely to appear in the personal plan. We build both and we build them against each other, because the tax projection, the retirement plan contribution, the exit valuation and the family's cash flow are the same conversation.

However, you aren't required to become a personal wealth client to engage with our business services. Personal wealth management is a separate engagement with its own fee schedule.

No. Relationships can start and stop with just one service and you can add others later when and if they ever become relevant to your business. If you do decide to increase your engagement, adding an additional service takes less of your time than the first did, because we already work together.

Yes. We serve businesses all over the United States. When the time comes, we can meet with you virtually, in our office, or in cases where we are able we will come to you.

A 3(38) investment fiduciary accepts legal responsibility for selecting and monitoring the investments inside a retirement plan. Until that responsibility is formally handed to someone who accepted it in writing, it sits with the plan sponsor — the business.

Many plans have a recordkeeper, a custodian and an administrator but no investment fiduciary at all, which means the liability never left the company. We serve as 3(38) fiduciary, benchmark plan fees against peer data, and document an annual review.

Investment advice and tax practice are regulated separately, so they are held in two companies. Your accounting, tax preparation and CFO work is done by Gatewood Tax and Accounting, a separate legal entity from Gatewood Wealth Solutions and not affiliated with LPL Financial.

What that means for you is two engagement agreements and two fees. What it does not mean is two firms to chase — the same team coordinates on the same file, from the same office.

A CPA files what already happened. Most of the value in a business's finances is decided before the year closes: how the owner is compensated, when equipment is bought, which entity holds what, how much goes into the retirement plan and whose name it goes in.

We prepare returns too, but the return is the last step rather than the engagement. If your current accountant is already doing that forward-looking work with you, you may not need us. If your only contact with them is in March, that is the gap we fill.

Accounting onboarding runs roughly sixty days: we take over the books, get financial statements arriving on time, confirm payroll compliance and produce a first tax projection.

A retirement plan changing providers runs sixty to ninety days end to end, and most of that work sits with us rather than with you.

Tax-only engagements can begin at any point in the year, though the earlier you start, the more of the year we can still change.
