Personal Tax Preparation

Your federal and state returns prepared by our in-house CPAs, coordinated with the team that already knows your entire financial plan.

Our Methodology

How We Prepare Your Taxes

Most tax returns are prepared by someone who sees your finances once a year, in a stack of documents, with no context of what you are planning next. The return gets filed correctly and on time. It just arrives too late to change anything.

At Gatewood, your return is prepared by CPAs in-house who work alongside the teams that manage your investments and write your plan. The preparer already knows about the Roth conversion, the gains realized in November and the charitable distribution taken from your IRA, because those were planned decisions rather than surprises found in a 1099 in February. What comes back is a filed return and a short list of what to change before next year.

The Deliverables

What Our Service Includes

Every return we prepare produces tangible, measurable deliverables that you can expect to receive.

Prior-Year Return Review

An overview of the return you filed last year before we take over, so anything missed, misclassified or left on the table is found before this year's return is started.

Individual Tax Return (1040)

Your federal and state individual returns prepared and filed each year, using the same context and financial figures that your planning team already has documented for your family.

Trust Tax Return (1041)

The annual fiduciary return for a trust you created or act for, prepared alongside your personal return so both reflect the same information accurately.

Gift Tax Return (709)

Filed in any year you make a gift that has to be reported, recording it against your lifetime exclusion so the running total is documented rather than reconstructed later.

Estate Tax Return (706)

Prepared for an estate that is required to file, working from the asset and titling record your planning team keeps, so the executor is not assembling it from scratch.

Amended Tax Returns

Filed when a corrected tax form arrives or an earlier year needs revisiting, with an explanation of what changed, what it is worth and whether amending is worth doing.
Our Team-Based Approach

An Integrated Family Plan

A truly comprehensive financial plan involves tax, investments, cash, insurance and your estate — which all require their own expertise.

Your Client Care Team sets the tax expectation with Gatewood Tax and Accounting in the fourth quarter, and our Investment Committee confirms what was actually realized once the year closes. Your plan gets advice guided by experience and all aspects of your plan fit together to support your goals.

That is what we call Firm-to-Family®, and it is how we create plans that endure for generations. Your advisor will one day retire, but your plan will outlast any one relationship.

Frequently Asked Questions

Personal tax preparation is the work of assembling the statements for your household, including your income, deductions, and credits for the year, completing the required federal and state forms, and filing them on your behalf.

Planning happens before the year ends, with the goal of changing the outcome. Preparation happens after it ends and reports the outcome.

Tax planning is projecting your bracket, modeling a Roth conversion, timing a capital gain or a charitable gift, and deciding what to do while there is still time to act. Tax preparation is completing and filing the return that results.

Hear What Our Clients Say

“My wife and I moved to St. Louis four years ago and became Gatewood clients in 2024, on a referral from our daughter-in-law. Her father was an established attorney who had said good things about the team, and that recommendation was passed down to us. That introduction set an expectation, and the people there have matched it. We've met a lot of the team by now, and the impression has been consistent with every one of them. Each person we're introduced to is professional, smart, and they work together well as a group — which says something about the people Gatewood hires…” Read more.
