Business Tax Preparation

Your partnership, S-corporation and C-corporation returns prepared by our in-house CPAs.

Our Methodology

How We Prepare Business Taxes

Most businesses spend far too much time looking in the rearview mirror, only making tax-related decisions when it's time to file.

At Gatewood, we know that every decision your business makes throughout the year can impact not only this years filing, but all the ones that follow. That's why we take a proactive approach and help our clients spend more time looking ahead, not just behind.

Our business clients' returns are prepared by CPAs in-house who already understand your business strategy, your financials, but most importantly, can consult with you before tax time to help you make tax-smart decisions with confidence and purpose.

The Deliverables

What Our Service Includes

Every service in our planning model produces tangible, measurable deliverables that you can expect to receive.

Prior-Year Return Review

A review of the return you filed last year before we take over, so that an election, a deduction or a basis figure that was handled incorrectly is found before this year's return is started.

Partnership Return (1065)

The partnership return and it’s K-1s, prepared through detailed review of the books, careful determination of each partner’s share of income, deductions, credits, and other tax items, to ensure consistency and accuracy.

S-Corporation Return (1120S)

The S-corporation return and its K-1s, incorporating reasonable compensation, shareholder distributions, and tax-planning decisions made throughout the year so the return reflects the strategy already in place.

C-Corporation Return (1120)

The corporate return prepared alongside the owner's personal return, so that both sides of a dividend or a salary decision are looked at together rather than one at a time in turn.

Business Quarterly Estimate Prep

Each quarter's estimated payment calculated throughout the year as business decisions are made, so that you are not discovering a surprise tax bill the following year

Amended Return (1120X)

Filed when a corrected form arrives or an earlier year needs revisiting, with an explanation of what changed, what it is worth to you and whether amending is worth doing at all.

What Your Business Can Write Off

If you spend money to run your business, there is a good chance it is deductible. The deductions that get missed are rarely exotic — they are the routine ones nobody wrote down, and the ones where the expense was real but the record of it was not. Our guide walks through six categories of deduction, the ones most often left on the table, and what the IRS expects you to keep for each.

  • Everyday Operating Costs
  • People & Professional Services
  • Vehicles, Travel & Meals
  • Equipment, Assets & Big Purchases
  • Insurance, Finance & Overlooked Deductions
  • The Golden Rule of Recordkeeping

Get the Most From Your Plan

Your Integrated Financial Plan

For many business owners, the company is the largest asset the household owns. How you pay yourself, which retirement plan you sponsor, when you reinvest and how you eventually retire or sell all shape your personal plan and your retirement, this year and in the years that follow.

That is why Gatewood includes the value of your business in your personal plan, and why one team manages both around one set of goals.

Every service on this wheel works from the same plan, so each one you use adds to a single picture: the business side shows what the company earns, owes and is worth, and the household side shows what that means for your income, savings, taxes and family. You can begin with the service you need most today and add others as your business and household change.

A ring of thirteen services around a centre reading Your Plan. The upper half is for households: financial planning, cash management, investment management, insurance management, tax planning, estate planning and tax preparation. The lower half is for businesses: tax preparation, accounting services, CFO services, retirement plans, insurance management and investment management. Each segment links to that service. What Firm-to-Family® Means

For the Families Behind the Business

Behind every business are families who depend on it.

The owner's household depends on what the company is worth and what it distributes. Each employee's household depends on the paycheck, the benefits and the plan they were enrolled in on their first day. We have never met a business decision that stopped at the business — which is why we built the firm to serve the family behind it.

Your Client Care Team creates the plan, and the specialists support it: the Investment Committee on the portfolio the sale proceeds become, Gatewood Tax and Accounting on the structure and the deduction, and your attorney on the documents behind the buy-sell.

That is what we call Firm-to-Family®, and it is why your plan is supported by a diverse and experienced team rather than one person.

Frequently Asked Questions

Personal wealth management is the coordination of every financial decision a family makes — planning, investments, tax, insurance and estate strategy — under one strategy rather than in separate silos. It differs from investment management, which addresses only the portfolio.

A financial advisor usually handles one piece of your finances, most often the investment portfolio.

A wealth manager, like Gatewood, coordinates the whole plan — the portfolio, the tax strategy, the insurance and the estate documents — so the pieces are built to work together.

The difference shows up when something in your life changes: a business sale, an inheritance, a retirement date. One advisor gives you one opinion. A team gives you a decision that has already been checked against the tax, insurance and estate consequences, and against your long-term goals.

No. We work with families at every stage of wealth, from those establishing their first savings habits to those transferring an estate. What changes as your wealth grows is the level of care behind your plan, not whether we can work with you.

Yes. We serve families all over the United States. We can meet with you virtually, in our office, or in cases where we are able we will come to you.

Your portfolio is managed by Gatewood's own CFA®-led Investment Committee. We do not outsource strategy to a third-party model provider, and we are not compensated for placing any particular product.

No. Tax planning is part of your wealth plan and covered by your advisory fee. Tax return preparation is a separate engagement through Gatewood Tax and Accounting, billed on its own and currently accepting new clients by waitlist.

No. We are happy to review outside accounts to provide you with honest recommendations, even if you never plan to move them over to our firm.

The accounts we do manage are held with our custodian, and the transfer is usually electronic and handled for you. Holdings that can move as they are do; anything that would have to be sold, we flag first along with the tax consequence.

Accounts we do not manage, such as a current employer's retirement plan, generally stay where they are and are still counted in your plan.

Hear What Our Clients Say

“My wife and I moved to St. Louis four years ago and became Gatewood clients in 2024, on a referral from our daughter-in-law. Her father was an established attorney who had said good things about the team, and that recommendation was passed down to us. That introduction set an expectation, and the people there have matched it. We've met a lot of the team by now, and the impression has been consistent with every one of them. Each person we're introduced to is professional, smart, and they work together well as a group — which says something about the people Gatewood hires…” Read more.
