Insurance Management

Everyone meets an insurable life event eventually, but will you have the coverage you need when it happens?

Our Methodology

How We Manage Insurance

Insurance is not a conversation you want to have when it's too late. A premature death or a serious illness removes income, and it arrives without any warning. If you're not prepared, your family's well-being and your retirement may stand at risk.

At Gatewood, we know that it is important to uncover today just how much your plan can absorb on its own, and how much coverage you might be missing — before a potential tragedy. We review your current policies, compare them to your financial plan, and help you cover any gaps that might exist to protect your family when it matters most.

The Deliverables

What Our Service Includes

Every service in our planning model produces tangible, measurable deliverables that you can expect to receive.

Life Insurance Gap Analysis

We examine the amount of coverage you need to hold to support your family in the event of an untimely death — so you know that your surviving spouse's expenses are covered.

Disability Insurance Gap Analysis

We measure the plan coverage needed to maintain your lifestyle and afford care in the event that you should ever lose income due to a short- or long-term disability and are unable to return to work.

Long-Term Care Gap Analysis

We price policies in the event that you will one day need long-term care, so that your needs are met without depleting your assets sooner than expected or adding any financial burden to those you love.

Property & Casualty Insurance Review

We facilitate a third-party review of the details of your property and casualty policies including home, auto, and umbrella insurance, so you know you've checked your risk management boxes.
Prepare Your Family

How We Protect Against the Worst-Case Scenario

We measure your policies against a fixed set of deliberately conservative assumptions to create a plan that can withstand the very scenarios we hope never arrive.
  • Can my family afford life without me?

We run the plan forward as if you were to pass away this year and size coverage so your surviving spouse still holds liquid assets until age 100, then set that against the coverage you hold.

  • What happens if I'm not able to work?

We price what a short or long-term disability would take out of your income, test how much of that the plan can absorb on its own and give you the difference as a number.

  • Will I be able to afford assisted living?

We model ten years of care beginning at age 80 and inflating at 4% a year, then test whether the portfolio can carry that change without compromising the rest of your plan.

How it All Works Together

What Your Fee Covers

We charge one advisory fee for household wealth management, calculated on the assets under our management. The fee schedule works like tax brackets, so the blended fee percentage declines as the portfolio grows. Trading and rebalancing sit inside that fee rather than being charged separately.

  • Personal Tax Preparation is billed as a separate engagement through Gatewood Tax and Accounting.

  • Any insurance products sold are subject to commissions, per industry standards.

You can read more in-depth about what we charge, how you're billed, and what your fees might be at the link below.

Our Team-Based Approach

An Integrated Family Plan

A truly comprehensive financial plan involves tax, investments, cash, insurance and your estate. Insurance here is not a separate conversation from the rest of your financial plan.

Your Client Care Team reviews the coverage against the plan — so a death benefit is checked against your estate documents, and a long-term care decision is checked against the portfolio it would otherwise draw on. Your plan gets advice guided by experience and all aspects of your plan fit together to support your goals.

That is what we call Firm-to-Family®, and it is how we create plans that endure for generations. Your advisor will one day retire, but your plan will outlast any one relationship.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, we sell life, disability and long-term care insurance. We are not an insurance broker; policies are placed through an outside broker.

We earn a commission when a policy is placed, and we disclose it. As fiduciaries we are legally and ethically bound to act in your best interest, without regard to what a recommendation pays us. We do not sell property and casualty insurance.

Sometimes.

Group life is often one or two times salary, which may not align with your actual needs.

Most group coverage ends when the job does, and it ends at the moment a new employer's underwriting is looking at you a few years older.

If the employer pays the premium the benefit is usually taxable, so a policy replacing 60% of income means much less hits your bank account than expected.

We review all these details and make sure you have the coverage that aligns with your goals and needs.

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, around 70% of adults aged 65 and over will need some form of long-term care. Whether you need to insure it is a different question, and it depends on what your plan can absorb.

As fiduciaries, we will always give you an honest assessment of whether you truly need a specific product.

It happens, and it is worth finding out early rather than late. Every recommendation in the analysis is subject to underwriting by the carrier, which looks at health, lifestyle and financial suitability, so final eligibility, premiums and coverage amounts can differ from the figures we model.

Where coverage is not available or not sensible, the plan has to absorb the risk instead. Since we review your entire financial picture alongside your insurance, we can make adjustments across the rest of the plan in the same meeting.

We're happy to tell clients that their coverage is sufficient and set up appropriately for their needs — that's the entire goal! As fiduciaries our goal is to give you an honest assessment regardless of what products you need and not base recommendations on potential commissions.

Yes, we are held to a fiduciary standard on all of our advisory accounts as well as by our teammate's designations such as CFP® and CFA®.

Gatewood is compensated by an advisory fee calculated as a percentage of the assets we manage and billed quarterly.

Hear What Our Clients Say

“My wife and I moved to St. Louis four years ago and became Gatewood clients in 2024, on a referral from our daughter-in-law. Her father was an established attorney who had said good things about the team, and that recommendation was passed down to us. That introduction set an expectation, and the people there have matched it. We've met a lot of the team by now, and the impression has been consistent with every one of them. Each person we're introduced to is professional, smart, and they work together well as a group — which says something about the people Gatewood hires…” Read more.
