Our Methodology

How We Manage Personal Wealth

Most firms manage your investments and call that wealth management. We manage your entire financial plan from retirement, tax, insurance, estate — we do it as one team of specialists, sitting in the same room.

The difference means your plan does not depend on one advisor knowing everything, and it does not depend on several companies hopefully coordinating the details with each other. This structure is what we call our Firm-to-Family® model, and when your family is a client of the firm, your plan can endure regardless of your advisor's busy schedule, or eventual retirement.

What You Can Expect

Our Process at a Glance

We are process-driven, not product-driven. That means our new client onboarding is focused on getting to know you, not pushing products you don't need or a commitment that doesn't fit. Every family we care for moves through the same five steps — designed to educate you on our process and give us a clear picture of your goals.
  1. Our first meeting is about getting to know you and what you're looking for in a wealth management relationship. This is an honest dialogue, and we tell you plainly whether we are the right firm to support you.
  2. We gather the information to get a full picture of your finances and ask questions to learn about your family's goals. By the end of this meeting we'll have the data we need to build personalized recommendations.
  3. We present our recommendations using live scenario modeling that lets you test strategies during the meeting and measure the gaps in your current plan, so you can make informed, confident decisions on how to proceed.
  4. If you decide to move forward, we introduce you to your Client Care Team, walk you through the onboarding process, grant you access to your Gatewood Wealth Portal, and set expectations for your future meetings.
  5. You and your family continue to meet with us at least once a year to review your plan, but throughout the year, you can schedule on-demand calls with our team for any questions or concerns that arise.

The Five Stages of Family Wealth

Families experience wealth in stages, and as the complexity grows, so does the plan. We guide families through every stage of that journey with deeply personalized planning, built around multigenerational relationships.
  1. Cultivating Wealth

The habit-building stage is focused on developing sound financial behaviors and learning the concepts your future wealth will be built on.
  2. Building Wealth

The accumulation stage is focused on growing your income, optimizing investments, and protecting the wealth your family is beginning to build.

  3. Activating Wealth

The pre-retirement stage is focused on turning career success into a clear retirement date and a lifestyle you know you can afford.
  4. Enjoying Wealth

The distribution stage is focused on drawing income confidently and aligning what you spend with the values and ambitions behind your wealth.
  5. Giving Wealth

The legacy stage is focused on transferring your wealth, your values, and your vision to the next generation with clarity and intention.

Our Tiered Billing Explained

Household Advisory Fees

Our fees are based on a tiered billing schedule. Each portion of your assets is billed at the rate for its own tier, so as asset levels increase, the blended fee percentage may decrease — resulting in a more favorable rate as your investments grow.

Fees are calculated on the balance of your managed accounts on the last business day of the preceding quarter, multiplied by your tiered fee.

With our family pricing model, accounts are combined for billing, so household assets are counted toward the same tier. That combination is what makes our multigenerational planning approach practical. Adding a parent's or an adult child's accounts moves the whole household toward a lower blended rate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Personal wealth management is the coordination of every financial decision a family makes — planning, investments, tax, insurance and estate strategy — under one strategy rather than in separate silos. It differs from investment management, which addresses only the portfolio.

No. We work with families at every stage of wealth, from those establishing their first savings habits to those transferring an estate. What changes as your wealth grows is the level of complexity behind your plan, not whether we can work with you.

You can read more about our fee schedule here.

Yes. We serve families all over the United States. We can meet with you virtually, in our office, or in cases where we are able, we will come to you.

Yes, we are held to a fiduciary standard on all of our advisory accounts as well as by our teammate's designations such as CFP® and CFA®.

Gatewood is compensated by an advisory fee calculated as a percentage of the assets we manage and billed quarterly.

You can read more about our fee schedule here.

Our portfolios are managed by Gatewood's own CFA®-led investment committee. We do not outsource strategy to a third-party model provider, and we are not compensated for placing any particular product.

No. Tax planning is part of your wealth plan and covered by your advisory fee. Tax return preparation is a separate engagement through Gatewood Tax and Accounting, billed on its own and currently accepting new clients by waitlist.

No. We are happy to review outside accounts to provide you with honest recommendations, even if you never plan to move them over to our firm.

The accounts we do manage are held with our custodian, and the transfer is usually electronic and handled for you. Holdings that can move as they are do; anything that would have to be sold, we flag first along with the tax consequence.

Accounts we do not manage, such as a current employer's retirement plan, generally stay where they are and are still accounted for in your plan.
